May 2005 Archives

I went to see the newest installment of the Star Wars series at the Metreon 9am on Thursday. Good flick. Probably my favorite since "The Empire Strikes Back". Understanding the story so far really helps a lot, though. Several of the people I saw it with were confused as to who was who and why they were acting certain ways.

Converting to wordpress

I'm moving my blog to WordPress due to multiple issues with Blogger. The last straw was the difficulty posting anything in <pre> or <code> elements.

So far I really like WordPress. There are some real site management tools, the editor is better, you can manage pages outside of the normal blog timestream, and it supports plugins. I still have a few things to work out, like the RSS feed, and, of course, the template design, but that's going to be fun for me. Also, I don't see any spell-checking functionality in the editor, but that may just be me.

According to SFGate, a US District Court judge has struck down Nebraska's constitutional amendment defining marriage as something between a man and a women. Laws and state constitutional amendments like this have been being passed all over the US, including in California. The judge struck it down because, the ban "imposes significant burdens on both the expressive and intimate associational rights" of gays "and creates a significant barrier to the plaintiffs' right to petition or to participate in the political process."

This is partly due to the fact that this amendment included a bunch of other anti-homosexual statues, including excluding same-sex partners from getting benefits if one is employed by a the state or a state university.

However, this is the first step in defending same-sex couples right to be treated exactly like couples composed of two sexes.

Clean Hydrogen Fuel Cells for Boats

HaveBlue.com has come up with a brilliant, and upon seeing it, obvious technology - power boats with hydrogen fuel cells. Their technology uses the stuff the boat is floating on (good old H20) and solar, wind, or hydro-electric energy to create the hydrogen that is used in the fuel cell. Basically, instead of using batteries to store the generated power, you are using a fuel cell. The fuel cell powers the generator, either for electricity or locomotion. No diesel fuel needed.

More blogger issues

Blogger doesn't allow me to use <code> or <pre> in posts. That sucks. I'm working on XSLT stylesheets right now, and I want to blog about them, but I can't because entering the information is impossible.

The amazing thing is that you can include those types of elements in your comments, but I can't put them in my blog!

Everytime I think I've resolved all my blogger problems (comments, trackbacks, categories), another one pops up. So far I haven't found an acceptable work-around for this one. If you have any tips, let me know.
